Microwaves: Tips for Safer Use

Most people using a microwave will have some familiarity with safety. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Do not put any metal in the microwave
  • Avoid metallic objects that can lead to sparks and cause a fire:
    • Foil
    • Silverware
    • Wire handles on “take out” Chinese food boxes
    • Mugs or plates with silver or gold designs
  • Use very low heat with styrofoam or clear plastic “take out containers”
  • Avoid high settings that melt styrofoam or plastic and ruin your food
  • Cover food containers with a paper towel or napkin to avoid splatter
  • Handle containers carefully when removing to avoid burns
  • Clean the microwave when food splatters to avoid “baking” it on!
