Microwaves: Tips for Safer Use
Most people using a microwave will have some familiarity with safety. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Do not put any metal in the microwave
- Avoid metallic objects that can lead to sparks and cause a fire:
- Foil
- Silverware
- Wire handles on “take out” Chinese food boxes
- Mugs or plates with silver or gold designs
- Use very low heat with styrofoam or clear plastic “take out containers”
- Avoid high settings that melt styrofoam or plastic and ruin your food
- Cover food containers with a paper towel or napkin to avoid splatter
- Handle containers carefully when removing to avoid burns
- Clean the microwave when food splatters to avoid “baking” it on!
